The body of a Shieldstown, West Bank Berbice cane-harvester, Deodat Persaud who apparently lost his life in a hit and run accident, was discovered along the roadway around 4.10 am yesterday.
His brother, Kapil Persaud of Bath Settlement, who made the discovery, said there was visible evidence on the road that his brother was manually dragged onto the parapet after being hit. He said Deodat had been drinking earlier and left home around 7 pm on Sunday.
Kapil, also a cane-harvester, said that he, another brother and two colleagues joined the Blairmont Estate truck around 4 am yesterday and were dropped off close to where the body was to await another truck.
They noticed the body and upon closer inspection realised it was Deodat’s. Kapil said he went across to the Blairmont Police Station to make a report and an officer told him she had heard a loud impact around 1 am.
The officer did not go out to check because she thought that a donkey had been struck down. Relatives are peeved that the police did not go out to check.
According to them, “they are there to protect us and they can’t come out? What if the vehicle had indeed hit the donkey end up in the trench and persons were trapped? They woulda surely die…”
Persaud’s mother, Ameran Azeez said one of her other sons woke her up around 4.30 am and told her that Deodat had been involved in an accident.
She did not realise that he was dead.
In tears, she was heading out the street, but collapsed halfway and had to be taken back home.
