Boat captain Ramkissoon Sukhan, called ‘Greenie,’ who was missing for about three weeks after a pirate attack, was laid to rest yesterday after his body was found on Monday at the Eversham foreshore on the Corentyne.
The body was decomposed and was missing both feet and hands. A hole was also evident in his head, Ramlall Sukhan, the dead man’s son, said yesterday.
An examination was performed on the body and no bullet wound was found to show that he was shot as claimed by his crew-members, Sukhan added.
Ramkissoon Sukhan, 53, of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara and a young fisherman, identified as Andrew and said to be around “17 or 18” years-old were reported missing after armed pirates terrorised and attacked them on the Corentyne shores on November 5.
Sukhan had reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to his right hand in the attack, after which the pirates forced him and his four-member crew to jump overboard. Andrew is still to be found while the other three men turned up alive with the story of the pirate attack.
Sukhan said that his family believed what their father’s co-workers had told them about being attack by pirates but there is now doubt after a doctor told them that no bullet wound was found on his remains. His family is now convinced that foul play was involved in his death. He added that the police did not investigate the matter properly but only took statements from the three survivors and released them.
Since Sukhan was missing, his family began to search for him and eventually continued even without the help of the police. The man’s son along with other relatives went as far as to neighbouring Suriname for three days, where they searched hoping to find his body.
His son said that a relative in Berbice called them on Monday and informed them that a body was found at the Eversham foreshore. He said that the relative went to the scene and identified Sukhan by the tattoos on his skin. His son added, “after they call we, we went up Berbice and we took a boat and go where we found his body.”
They noted that they went to the police and the No 66 Fisheries after they learnt that Sukhan’s body was found but they were not provided with any assistance to retrieve his body. The family was then forced to hire a boat to go and retrieve the man’s remains.
Sukhan’s family is now trying to compile information surrounding his death, after which they will decide the next step forward since they say the police are not doing anything.
