The Mayor and City Council says its Public Health Department found 60 of 116 eating houses it inspected to be in contravention of the rules governing places to provide food for sale to the public.
In a press release, the M&CC said this discovery was made by its meat and food inspectorate during the exercise which was conducted at restaurants, food factories, aerated water factories, retail spirit shops, wine factories, liquor restaurants and hotel bars; bakeries and whole and retail provision shops, supermarkets, bonds, cold stores and food trays and cane juice stands.
In addition, during inspections carried out at 320 houses, cottages, yards, convenience stores, common lodging houses and hair dressing salons 81 mosquito breeding places were found and 65 were treated.
The City Council is calling on residents to examine their roof gutters and ensure that overhanging trees are trimmed to avoid creating mosquito breeding grounds. Home-owners are also advised to avoid leaving water containers uncovered with water for long periods and that depressions in yards are filled in.
