Dharendra Persaud, accused of the grisly cutlass attack at Bonasika Creek that left a man dead and his ex-wife with a severed hand, was yesterday arraigned on the capital charge.
Persaud appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court, accused of the murder of Unity, Mahaica seaman Mahendra “Richard” Narine.
He was not required to plead to the charge and was remanded to prison until February 25.
Narine, 22, of Unity, Mahaica was pronounced dead on arrival at the Leonora Hospital after the attack last Thursday, which is believed to have been the result of Persaud’s jealousy over his relationship with his ex-wife, Joy “Sunita” Meyers, who had left him the month before.
Narine was yesterday laid to rest at the Lancaster Cemetery in Mahaica, after a funeral service was held at his home, which saw family and neighbours who knew him well attend to pay their last respects.
Meanwhile, at the Georgetown Public Hospital, where Meyers is a patient, she related that she is feeling better and is improving since she arrived at the hospital last Thursday. Meyers said that she feels less pain and is able to move about.
“I can’t go and watch dah boy deh get buried. I feel real bad about what happen, but yah know you got to live with it. But I can’t get over what happen, can’t forgive meh self,” Meyers said.
Meyers also said yesterday that she was visited by Persaud’s brother and his wife, who are caring for four of her five children, as well as a welfare official who sought her consent to have the other child handed over to the couple.
