-Lloyd seeking advice from President Ramotar
Former Secretary of the now disbanded Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Anand Sanasie said it plans to select a team for the 2013 Caribbean Twenty20 tournament on Monday, after a three-day trial meet.
When this newspaper contacted Sanasie on the issue he said a three-day Inter-County trial has been organised with two matches scheduled per day. The first two matches will be played today at the Everest Cricket Ground. The first match which bowls off at 9am, will see Demerara taking on President XI followed by Essequibo and Berbice from 1pm. Tomorrow, President XI will play Berbice while Essequibo faces Demerara then Essequibo and President XI and Berbice versus Demerara on the third day.
November 22 had been set as the deadline for the submission of team lists.
However, Clive Lloyd, Chairman of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) on Cricket told Stabroek Sport via telephone that he was in the process of penning a letter to President Donald Ramotar seeking advice on what steps should be taken in the matter. According to Lloyd, the selection of the team continues to be a bone of contention as the defunct GCB is trying to select a team for the 2013 competition.
On the other hand, a press release from the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) on Sunday said it would set a new date for the GCB to submit the team that will contest the Caribbean tournament.
According to the release, the date will be communicated to the local board and the public. Further, the WICB “reiterates its position that it recognizes the Guyana Cricket Board as the sole governing body responsible for the administration, management and development of cricket in Guyana. Further the Board reminds that the Guyana Cricket Board is a shareholder of the WICB.”
Further, the WICB encourages the parties involved to find a speedy solution to its dispute, in the interest of local cricket.
The WICB and the Guyana Government have been severely at odds over the management of cricket in Guyana.
The government here appointed an interim management committee headed by Lloyd in December last year. Neither the former GCB nor the WICB has recognized the body headed by Lloyd. As a result, the WICB has pulled international cricket matches from Guyana.
