The Guyana Power and Light says that at 4.37 am yesterday, the 60hz component of the Demerara Interconnected System suffered a shutdown during the inclement weather then.
A statement from GPL said that the shutdown was caused by a fault on the 69kv transmission line and affected consumers along the East and West Coast of Demerara, South and North Georgetown and West and East Bank of Demerara going all the way up to Timehri and Kurukururu.
The power company says that engineers on duty were hampered by the weather in their bid to restore power and were eventually able to do this at 6.15 am.
GPL extended gratitude to persons who reported hearing an explosion behind North Ruimveldt and to those who called in network faults. The power company said that all efforts are being made to rectify network problems promptly.
