After years of having their pleas fall on deaf ears, relief may very well be forthcoming for residents of Onion Field, La Bonne Intention (LBI) East Coast Demerara (ECD).
On Wednesday, November 28, the Sugar Industry Labour Welfare Fund Committee (SILWFC) announced that it would be inviting tenders for the rehabilitation of the street which measures 1228 x 10 ft.
This newspaper had reported on the roads in the community in its July 31 edition after a visit revealed that they were riddled with potholes making traversing them virtually impossible.
Estreleta Adams, a resident of the area, said that the plot of land had once been the property of GuySuCo and was converted to a housing scheme where workers of the LBI Estate were given first priority to acquire land. She added that since not many GuySuCo workers applied for house lots in the area it was handed over to the government. “Since de government tek over dis scheme them nah do nothing and GuySuCo does help sometimes but de only way dey does do that is if dem workman ask dem,” she said.
She further stated that residents had approached the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) on several occasions soliciting assistance but were told that the scheme had not yet been handed over to the NDC and therefore it could not carry out any maintenance works there.
