…in Diamond Mineral Water hockey
The Diamond Mineral Water Indoor Hockey tournament started yesterday at the National Gymnasium and GCC Veterans, YMCA men, GCC Ladies and the Renegades men were the first four winners in the tournament.
GCC Veterans playing the first game of the tournament defeated Old Fort by a 2-1 margin. President of the Hockey Board, Phillip Fernandes scored the two winning goals for GCC in the 11th and 20th minutes. Mark George in the 13th minute was the scorer of the lone goal for Old Fort. At half time both teams were tied at 1 all.
Game two saw YMCA of Barbados and Hikers clashing in the first men’s match of the tournament, but it was the Bajans who came out on top with 5 goals against Hikers 3. Rohan Thomas with one field goal and a penalty corner in the 29th and 15th minutes, followed by Mario Moore with two field goals in the 23rd and 25th minutes followed by Dario Lewis with the fourth field goal in the 31st minute sealed the game for the YMCA.
Defending ladies champions GCC did exactly what was expected of them with their 6-0 defeat of Bokra. Sonia Jardine scored two goals in the 6th and 18th minutes, followed by Samantha Fernandes in the 34th and 34th minutes. The two individual goals were scored by Trisha Woodroffe and Ashley DeGroot in the 30th and 32nd minutes.
In the second men’s match Renegades in the surprising comeback defeated Old Fort by a 5-4 margin. Shane Samuels scored three goals in the 36th and 37 minutes. Two of the goals were scored in the 37th minutes. Shaf Fernandes and Nku Davis scored in the 27th and 17th minutes respectively.
Scoring for Old Fort were Ademine Simon in the 4th and 19th minutes while Shawn Berretto and Micah Texeira scored in the 7th and 25th minutes.
The competition continues today at the same venue with twelve matches, the first of which starts at 10 hours.
