The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) is calling for a shutdown in the capital to protest the garbage situation, according to Executive Member Joseph Harmon.
The shutdown is scheduled for two to three days during this week. Party members gathered yesterday at Gill House Square, West Ruimveldt to discuss the situation with residents. Harmon told those in attendance that the situation in Georgetown was recognised at the party’s recent congress.
“Georgetown stinks, there is no way for the water to flow and it is causing floods,” Harmon said. He added that the whole situation is a result of the garbage problem in the city and thus “we are calling for a total clean up of Georgetown with everybody on board.”
He said there risks to health due to the garbage and potential danger posed by snakes and alligators seen crawling out of the clogged drains and canals.
Harmon added that citizens are willing to be a part of a clean-up exercise once they are given the tools but he noted that their efforts alone cannot resolve the situation.
As a result, he is calling on government, the public and private sectors and political parties to be involved. He added that once the campaign gets on board, there will be a public education programme to inform others and to aid in keeping the city clean.
