A 76-year-old pensioner, Mohamed Shaeed Hamid of 20 Maida Farm, Corentyne was shot dead around 2:40 yesterday morning when person/s invaded his yard.
The man’s wife, Nazmoon Amin, 67, told Stabroek News that he appeared to have sustained a single gunshot wound to his chest.
Hamid, known as `Tulu’, who was bleeding profusely, collapsed and died as he was about to enter the kitchen in the lower flat.
Amin recalled that they both woke up just before the shooting and he opened the door and left to go down to use the washroom. The woman said she heard him asking someone, “what you doing in meh yard.”
Shortly after, she heard what sounded like the shattering of her light bulb. When she went downstairs to check, she heard her husband call for her “Naz” and he was trying to crawl into the kitchen but collapsed in from of the door. The woman burst into tears as she related what happened next.
“After meh come down and see he crawling I ask he if them beat he and what happened but he na answer meh”, she said. She further said that after her husband collapsed she rushed to him and that was when she observed a hole in his chest with blood pouring out.
She said she “push meh finger in it and feel it deep and meh ask he if ‘dem shoot yuh’?”
Amin said she shook his chin but there was no response and she started to cry and shout.
She also called out to
the neighbours who rushed over to offer assistance. A neighbour said she called the police who responded about half an hour after and started to conduct investigations. She also added that around 4:30 am the hearse came and took the body to Ramoo’s funeral parlour.
According to Amin, the attacker apparently scaled the fence because the gate was tightly shut. She did not see anyone because “me din pay attention to dem, me pay all the attention to me husband.”
Meanwhile, she recalled that several years ago, bandits broke into their home and stole all their belongings.
The bandits had beaten her and her husband severely and they had to seek treatment at both private and public hospitals.
The couple survived on their pension and by planting “a little garden.” The two had been married for 37 years.
