The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) yesterday released the names of a 14-man team along with seven standby players to contest the 2013 Caribbean Twenty20 tournament.
The naming of the team is likely to continue the fractious relations between the GCB and the government over the management of cricket in Guyana.
The players named are: Trevon Griffith, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Leon Johnson, Narsingh Deonarine, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Christopher Barnwell, Royston Crandon, Steven Jacobs, Derwin Christian, Jonathan Foo, Veerasammy Permaul, Devendra Bishoo, Ronsford Beaton and Rajiv Ivan.
The standby players are Dillon Heyliger, Assad Fudadin, Paul Wintz, Keon Joseph, Anthony Bramble, Ander Stoll and Shemroy Hetemyer.
According to the GCB release the players have to assemble at the Chetram Singh Centre of Excellence, LBI tomorrow.
The GCB’s naming of the team comes two days ahead of the new deadline set by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) for the selection of the team.
The GCB had not named a team because of the ongoing tussle with the government. The government had de-recognised the GCB last year and named an interim management committee headed by Clive Lloyd to run cricket here. This interim body is however not recognized by the WICB which expects that the GCB and not the Lloyd-run body will name the team.
The government has argued that there are court orders prohibiting the GCB and its members from performing cricketing duties. However, one of the defendants in the matter yesterday provided legal documents to Stabroek Sport to show that the applicable action had been withdrawn and discontinued by the applicant.
It is on this ground that the GCB has been saying that it has the right to operate since the legal prohibition is no longer in effect.
However, last week Sport Minister Dr. Frank Anthony said that there is still an injunction in force which prevents the GCB from operating. He also said that several executive members of the GCB have since resigned and that the WICB is aware of this.
The WICB nevertheless, continues to state that it will not be dealing with the Interim Management Committee installed by the Government and it recently rejected a suggestion by the Government for it (the WICB) to identify an agent in Guyana to handle its cricketing affairs here. As a result of the controversy, the WICB has withdrawn international cricket from Guyana.
