Georgetown Mayor Hamilton Green yesterday appealed to citizens to get on board the clean-up of the capital.
Green told a press conference yesterday that the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) is looking for alternative ideas to address the current garbage situation.
He appealed to all citizens to get on board, saying it is the collective effort of all members of society that is needed to solve the problem. A public education programme aimed at educating the citizenry is expected to be in action in the coming weeks to assist with the cleaning-up exercise, the mayor added.
He added that that over the past weeks he has been meeting with members of the business community and members of the diplomatic corps to discuss the security of the capital.
Green also said that the current state of Georgetown was discussed at the People’s National Congress Reform’s most recent General Council meeting.
Last Saturday, Executive Member of the party Joseph Harmon said the situation was recognised at the party’s recent congress and said it was calling for a shutdown to push for a clean-up. “Georgetown stinks, there is no way for the water to flow and it is causing floods,” Harmon said, adding that the whole situation is a result of the garbage problem in the city and thus “we are calling for a total clean up of Georgetown with everybody on board.”
