An East Ruimveldt man accused of robbing a man at gunpoint at a wash bay in the area was yesterday remanded to prison.
Jamal Johnson, 22, of 422 East Ruimveldt, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on an armed robbery charge.
It was alleged that on December 3, 2012,he robbed Ronnie Chan of a gold chain, a cell phone and a quantity of cash, which amounted to $263,000 in total.
Johnson was not required to plead to the charge.
Prosecutor Venetta Pindar said Chan, a bus conductor and his driver were at a wash bay in East Ruimveldt when Johnson entered the yard with another person and placed a gun to his head and demanded the articles mentioned in the charge.
He then allegedly relieved Chan of the articles and escaped. The robbery was then reported, leading to Johnson’s arrest
Johnson’s lawyer Paul Fung-a-Fat said that no caution statement was given by his client to the police and he was never found at the scene.
Bail was refused and the case was adjourned until December 19.
