KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC- Nicholas ‘The axeman’ Walters is seeking to become the first Jamaican to win a world title on home soil when he fights with Daulis Prescott of Colombia in a World Boxing Association featherweight bout tomorrow night.
Walters, the number one contender for the WBA featherweight title, arrived in Jamaica on Tuesday oozing confidence after months of intense preparation in Panama.
Walters, who has a ring record of 24-0, with 17 knockouts, has been involved in light training in Jamaica ahead of Saturday’s much anticipated fight.
“I have been focused from months ago, I have been working hard .My coach has been pushing me in the gym, I have been pushing myself too” Walters told reporters at the Norman Manley International Airport.
“I know that Jamaican people definitely need this fight and it’s not going to be anything different. You are going to see the same axe man but a more sharper axeman, a more mean axeman.I will be going for blood”.
Three other Jamaican fighters- Bunny Grant, Percy Hayles and Richard ‘Shrimpy’ Clarke all failed to win world titles on home soil.
However the 26 year old contender says while his goal is to win a world title on Jamaican soil he is not focusing too much on history.
“The fighters that fought before me they are great fighters but that was their opportunity. They didn’t make use of their opportunity” Walters told reporters.
“This is my opportunity so I am taking full advantage of my opportunity. I am going there to do my work and I know that I am going to come out successful”.
Walter’s fight against Prescott is scheduled for 11 rounds and is the main bout on a five-fight card at the National Indoor Sports Centre.
There will be three other title fights, two of which will feature female boxers.
Kina Malpartida of Peru will defend her WBA super featherweight title against Stacey Reile of the United States and Alys Sanchez of Venezuela will go up against Maria Elena Villalobos of Mexico for the WBA interim Super lightweight title.
Also, Peru’s Mauricio Reynosos will take on Costa Rica’s Jaime Barboza in a Fedelatin super middleweight contest over 11 rounds, and Jamaicans Rikardo Smith and Sakima Mullings will clash over eight rounds.
