Cane harvester Troy Liverpool, who was struck down by a policeman on Monday night, succumbed to his injuries early yesterday morning at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Liverpool, 38, called ‘Lil Man,’ of 22 Queen Street, Courtland Village, Corentyne, had been in critical condition since his admittance to the hospital following the accident. He passed at 12:05 am yesterday.
Liverpool was hit while walking along the roadway at Fyrish, Corentyne, on Monday night, police said.
Aunt of the deceased, Ann Crandon, told Stabroek News that he was following a woman home at the time he was hit.
The woman, Shawna Simpson, told Crandon that Liverpool was behind her when the accident occurred. She suddenly heard a noise and when she looked around, she saw Liverpool in the air. He landed on his head.
The mourning Crandon said that the driver drove away but turned back after fuming eyewitness called him back.
The officer subsequently transported Liverpool to the New Amsterdam Hospital, from where he was later transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital.
A post-mortem examination will be performed on Monday.
Meanwhile, Stabroek News was told that the policeman has been placed on house arrest and close arrest at the Albion Police Station.
