An accident around 6:45pm yesterday in Atlantic Ville, East Coast Demerara (ECD) resulted in five people being hospitalized and several others nursing minor injuries.
The two drivers have been taken into custody.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred as a route 45 minibus, licence plate BKK 1776 attempted to overtake a car, licence plate PLL 8410 as both vehicles were making their way west along the southern East Coast carriageway.
Twenty-seven year old Marcus Jacobs and Davendra, drivers of the minibus and car respectively have both been taken into police custody and are assisting with investigations.
According to a friend of Davendra, the man and his four passengers, some of whom had not too long arrived in the country, were on their way to Success to visit family. Apart from the driver, there were two children and two adults in the car, none of whom sustained injuries serious enough to warrant being admitted to the hospital.
It is unclear how many passengers were in the bus at the time of the accident, but what is certain is that all five accident victims admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) were, at the time, passengers of the minibus.
Among those admitted were Jennifer Griffith of Essequibo, Rodwin Todd, the conductor of the minibus, and 19 year old Prudence Archer. Todd’s condition, up to press time, was described as critical: sources say that the man would more than likely have to be taken to the Theatre before the night was through. He was, at the time in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the GPHC.
