A miner was stabbed to death on Tuesday evening during an argument at Monesee Backdam, Port Kaituma, North West District and the suspect is in custody.
While police gave the dead man’s name as Richard Joseph, 21, of Pomeroon, an aunt identified the deceased as Romado Joseph, 22, of Dredge Creek, Pomeroon.
The woman, who asked to be referred to only as “Aunty Finey,” was too distraught to speak in detail, saying that the news of the young man’s death was taking its toll on her.
She said that from what was relayed to her, Joseph, who was employed as a ‘jet man’ at a mining camp in Port Kaituma, was at a shop when he had an argument with a friend over his phone’s memory card. A scuffle ensued over the card and he was fatally stabbed to his neck.
The woman described her nephew as hardworking man and one who always wanted his independence. She informed that his mother died some years ago, leaving him in her care. He had left for work at the mining camp one year ago.
According to a police press release issued yesterday, the murder occurred around 11pm on Tuesday.
Joseph’s body is currently at the Moruka mortuary and will be brought out to Charity, Essequibo for an autopsy sometime today. The suspect remains in custody.
