Despite winning only one game in their first international tournament, Coach of the University of Guyana’s Rugby team, Lawrence Adonis said that his charges were very competitive and the best is yet to come.
The young team played seven games over the weekend at the two-day Carib/Tobago International Sevens in Trinidad and Tobago.
“It was quite an experience for us”, said Adonis during an interview with Stabroek Sport yesterday.”The weather was poor because there was a lot of rainfall and most of the experienced teams did well because they could have handled the mud and the conditions but we were in every game and we competed”.
Adonis disclosed that despite losing their Captain, Rondell McArthur and star player, Lancelot Adonis early in the tournament through injury, the team gave a “good account of themselves”.
“For our first international and second tournament playing as a team that missed its key players, we gave a good account of ourselves so much so that the team that won the competition, The Howlers from Canada they defeated us 27-nil and some other teams they won by 40 to 50 points so”.
He added “Our defence was good, we have good speed and we were confident as a team, we look forward to the next tournament because we learned a lot of new techniques and plays and we are growing with confidence with each game so we could only get better from here”, Adonis declared.
Adonis continued “Some of the teams defeated us by 12 and 17 points but we were always in the game we were very competitive and we had a lot of opportunities to score but we made a lot of rookie mistakes”.
Adonis also said that the team plans to return to Trinidad next year but will be competing in some local tournaments early next year as well.
The local University won their solitary game, 27-five against Crum from the University of Venezuela.
