A driver was yesterday charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and behaving disorderly.
Mark Hopkinson, 31, of Lot 2878 Kaikan Street, North Ruimveldt, was granted $55,000 bail after he denied the three charges at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on September 21, in Georgetown, Hopkinson unlawfully assaulted police constable Quincy Lewis, who was on duty at the time.
It is further alleged that on the same day, Hopkinson, in public viewing behaved disorderly at the Brickdam Police Station, a public place. It is also alleged that on the same date, at the Brickdam Police Station, he resisted arrest from police constable Quincy Lewis, a peace officer acting in duty.
Attorney George Thomas, who represented the accused, appealed for bail on the grounds that Hopkinson has a good defence and is willing to report and appear at any given time that the prosecution and police request. He also noted that his client has no previous or pending matters before the court.
The prosecution had no objections to bail, which Magistrate Leron Daly set in the sums of $25,000 for the charge of assault, $10,000 for the charge of disorderly behaviour and $20,000 for resisting arrest.
Hopkinson is due to reappear in court on January 18, 2013, when the matters will be called for reports and fixtures.
