Over 1,000 Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) customers are currently experiencing low water pressure owing to electricity disruptions at production sites in areas on the West Coast and the East Bank Demerara.
Customers on the West Coast Demerara in areas such as Cornelia Ida, Anna Catherina, Leonora, Zeeburg, Meten-Meer-Zorg, Tuschen and on the East Bank at Farm are currently affected, GWI said in a press release yesterday.
The disruption has been going on for over a month now, but the situation has escalated, GWI Public Relations Officer Timothy Austin said when contacted. Residents of Farm told Stabroek News they have been experiencing low water levels during the day for about two weeks now and around 8 pm the water goes entirely. They also said that the current development has disrupted their daily flow of activities.
One resident complained that she had not washed any dishes for the day because she is tired of fetching water. She said, “We studying if we gon get water by Christmas because we want clean… You have to do what you have to do before the water gone.”
The residents added that their electricity has been fluctuating during the last two weeks as well but they hope both situations are resolved before the holidays.
GWI also said in the release that it wishes to advise all customers on the West Coast Demerara affected by low service levels that the company is providing full cooperation and assistance to the Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL) to resolve all issues affecting GWI treatment plants and well stations.
It also said that all measures are being taken to restore normal service as swiftly as possible.
