The Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) on Thursday presented a number of stop signs to the Guyana National Road Safety Council (GNRSC) to boost its campaign for road safety.
“Accidents just don’t happen as an act of God, but by people that are not paying attention, and stopping to think,” Senior Advisor of PAHO, Adrianus Vlugman, said at the presentation ceremony held yesterday at the Guyana Red Cross Society.
According to GNRSC Coordinator Ramona Doorgen the council was thankful for PAHO’s contribution and urged the private sector to support the cause.
“We have the international organisations on board with us but we need the public and private sector’s help,” she said, noting that accumulating the finances to fund outreach programmes and other awareness activities was especially challenging. “We are asking for support because it’s our aim by next year to reduce road fatalities by 50 per cent,” she added.
The stop signs donated to the GNRSC will be utilised by 50 schools countrywide.
