Dear Editor,
I thought those large power squibs were banned. It seems to me that our authorities have a style of flaring up like an old stove whenever, and not sticking diligently to a position – like loud music in vehicles, and a truckload of other traffic violations.
Normally small-size squibs and colourful firecrackers could be fun and helped to brighten up the Christmas season in a way we all have been accustomed to, but not so any more. I’ve seen and heard accounts of the terrible damage these now dynamite-like explosives have done to both user and victims – innocent bystanders, elderly folks, infants. The unconscionable, idiotic, dumb behaviour by both adults and children is creating too much serious mayhem. Is there still anyone who thinks that nothing is wrong with the reckless and ignorant behaviour of the people involved with the use of these ‘bombs’ just having ‘fun?’
As has happened repeatedly, what seems fun for some spells danger for others who bear the scars and disfigurement today; or experience heart problems; or in the case of infants are damaged by the sudden thunderous blast. Equally traumatized are sick folks, not to mention dumb animals. Could such things be considered fun? Nay! Conversely they have created much trepidation, anxiety and jumpiness that is just not in harmony with the festive season.
Understand that it was the countless injuries to persons and further danger posed by these powerful explosions that led to decisions being taken to have them prohibited and restricted, and taken out of the hands of the unthinking for the safety of citizens. It really worries me that we have this propensity to be so reactive considering the times we are living in, when it is difficult to distinguish a gunshot from a squib explosion.
I really do hope that the Ministry of Home Affairs revisits this very frightening situation to prevent further mayhem.
Your faithfully,
Frank Fyffe
