The Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera) hybrids originates from the tropical rainforest of Brazil. However the Christmas cacti that are available today are specially bred hybrids. Imitate the conditions of its natural habitat and the Christmas cactus will thrive. It needs good light and a little moisture, while a little mixture of sand and promix will do nicely when repotting. The stems are like arching links of flat green leaves with toothed segments.
These segments are approximately two inches long and have thick ribs in the middle. Older plants produces side branches from the main stems. Flower buds develop at the ends of the segments. Many growers ‘force’ their plants to flower for Christmas when they are especially popular.
The Christmas cactus grows to approximately 12 inches in height when it is mature. Water it sparingly. It can be grown outdoors under semi-shade.
The hybrid colours available are the popular red, white, pink and purple. Sometimes they are two-toned with contrasting centres. The Christmas cactus makes a wonderful centrepiece and it will flower for weeks. After Christmas it can be transplanted into a hanging basket.
It can be grown from cuttings, and it will live for many years provided it receives proper care.
All those gardening friends who planted sorrel and ginger, it’s time to reap the fruits of thy labour!
Until next week, Happy Gardening!
