An eight-year-old Lima Sands, Esse-quibo lad is nursing third degree burns at the Suddie Hospital after his home was destroyed by a fire which started as he attempted to sell kerosene using a candle for illumination.
A relative of Denzil Conway, told Stabroek News yesterday that the fire began when the child who normally assists with selling in the family shop attempted to sell a customer kerosene oil from a barrel in the shop. “They had blackout and he went with a candle in one hand to see what he doing and before he could finish boof! He foot get burn up but he run outside screaming”, he said.
The bucket brigade efforts by neighbours proved futile as not only kerosene but gasoline was also stored in the shop for sale causing the flames to quickly consume the entire building.
The fire service at Anna Regina was called but by the time they arrived the building was already destroyed.
A nephew of the owner of the building, Rondell Conway informed that his uncle was not at home at the time of the fire as he works as a carpenter in the city. It is his wife and two children who are mostly home at the building and run the family grocery store and fuel business. The child’s mother was not at home at the time of the fire as she had left them to reportedly purchase stocks for the shop.
Up to yesterday afternoon Denzil Conway was still being treated at the hospital. His condition was listed as stable and Stabroek News was told that he will be discharged sometime later this week.
