Dwayne Jordan, who was found guilty of chopping his wife to death, was sentenced to death by Justice Navindra Singh in the High Court today.
Jordan was found guilty of the June 14, 2007 murder of Claudine Rampersaud at Den Amstel, West Coast Demerara.
In handing down his sentence, Justice Singh said it bothered him that Jordan had heard a rumour that his reputed wife had a man, following which, she was found in an abandoned house with what appeared to be injuries caused by a hatchet and a knife.
Death should be the penalty for serious crime when the court believes that there is no regard for human life, the judge said. He added that the argument by the defence that it was a crime of passion cannot be accepted.
