Dear Editor,
The cold-blooded massacre of innocent children at an elementary school in the US state of Connecticut is one of the most despicable and bizarre actions imaginable. Some 27 people were killed, the majority of whom were children still in their young and formative years. This is indeed heart-rending and touched in a very profound way the collective conscience of humanity as a whole.
According to media reports the killer shot himself.
This is clearly an act of desperation inflicted by a sick mind that has completely lost a sense of humanity and rational thinking. The motive for the killings is still to be established but it is difficult to understand what could have gone into the mind of the killer to execute such a dastardly and bestial act.
This is not the first such incident of this nature to have taken place in the United States which raises the question as to whether adequate control mechanisms are in place to ensure that guns are not put in the wrong hands.
My own view is that sale of guns and the issuance of gun licences is somewhat liberal, resulting in far too many cases of unwarranted deaths and injuries.
Yours faithfully,
Hydar Ally
