The second annual Georgetown Football Association Banks Beer Knockout Cup tournament will continue this evening at the Georgetown Cricket Club’s Bourda ground with another double header.
In the opening game Caribbean United will oppose Blueberry Hill while the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) will tackle Kwakwani Strikers in the feature game at 8apm.
Coach of GFC, Peter Lashley, feels that with hard work, discipline and a little luck, his team could progress deep into the tournament.
“We have a young nucleus of players and I am aware of their lack of experience but we have to show conviction. They are a disciplined bunch and will bring ample energy and fight come kick off time,” Lashley told Stabroek Sport in an invited comment.
He added that preparations have been hampered by the weather but the players have been trying their best to get ready.
“The best facilities are at our disposal but the results have not been going our way. We are not seen as one of the more attractive teams and because of this we have always struggled to keep hold of our best players. Realistically the semi-finals are our main goal and you never know what can happen from there.”
Meanwhile over at the Tucville ground, Stabroek Sports caught up with Lloyd Millington of the Mocha-based outfit Riddim Squad who was astutely drilling his young charges in a tactical session.
“The weather has certainly not helped our case but we will be ready come game time. “Tactically, technically and physically we can match anyone. Mentally, we have hurt ourselves in the past and we will be working to curb this problem.”
He said that his team was young but hungry for success and is seen by many as a dark horse in the tournament.
“We are an outside favourite and we understand why. It’s time we start showing what we are, an elite team, and we can only do that on the field.”
He stated that winning the critical battles were essential to his team’s success adding that vital mental errors have caused his players to be guilty of the charge of beating themselves.
“We have suffered hard losses because of mental capitulation in the past. Our focus needs to be optimal for 120 minutes, only then can we get over the “proverbial hurdle”. We are a close knit bunch that possesses great chemistry because we are a family. The talent is there, all that is left is for us to execute our game plan and then we will be successful,” he declared.
