PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC-Beaten finalist in the just ended Caribbean Cup, Trinidad and Tobago, is planning to target their strikers for special training ahead of the 2013 edition of the CONCACAF Gold cup in the United States.
The Soca Warriors scored just two goals in the group stage and one in their semi-final match against Martinique before losing to Cuba in the final on Sunday.
Co head coach Hudson Charles says his strikers wasted too many opportunities at point blank range and is urging them to focus on developing their finishing.
“The execution was the problem. We created a lot of opportunities, but we didn’t put them away” Charles said in an interview with Newsday.
“We still need to possess the ball a bit more because I feel we gave it away too much in some of our games. Possession and finishing, which is where we have to improve”.
However, despite scoring a mere three goals in five matches, Charles says the strength of the warriors is their defence, which he believes can enhance efforts to return the country to football supremacy in the wider region.
Trinidad and Tobago conceded just five goals in their five games during the tournament. “The strength of our team is the defence” Charles stressed.
“We work a lot on the defensive aspect of our game in our training and you can see it really paid us dividends in this tournament”.
The players, who returned home on Monday, will resume Pro League action with their various clubs, before the resumption of national training in February.
