A man was fatally stabbed in an attack by another man at the Stabroek Market yesterday afternoon.
Kelvin Canes, 41, called ‘Reds,’ of South Ruimveldt, died on his way to the Georgetown Hospital after he was stabbed with a knife as he was sitting at a stall at the market. His attacker, whose name was given as ‘Joshua’, fled the scene with the murder weapon. Up to press time he was at large.
Canes had a pending robbery case before the courts in which he was the Virtual Complainant. He went to court earlier in day and returned to the market, where he would normally sell gold.
The attack occurred around 3:30pm.
An eyewitness said he saw a man and Canes punching each other. The eyewitness added that he thought that the man’s attacker was punching him and Canes was defending himself. He said, “I din know that is stab the man stabbing he. Is till when the man run way with the knife in he hand and I see Reds run and then fall down that I know the man stab he.”
In tears, the dead man’s brother said he was at the back of the market when someone called him and told him that his brother had been stabbed.
He said he then rushed to hospital, where he learnt that his brother had passed away.
The man’s family also said that he lost his reputed wife on Sunday but has two surviving sons from a prior relationship.
