Terrence John was found guilty and sentenced to four years imprisonment for discharging a loaded firearm at a policeman.
It was alleged that on December 23, 2011, in the Georgetown District, John opened fire on Police Corporal Kester Cusbert with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm. It was also alleged that on the day of the shooting John had in his possession one .32 Walther pistol and six rounds of ammunition.
When John made his first appearance in court last year, the prosecution presented evidence that the firearm and ammunition in question were unlicensed.
John denied all charges read against him, claiming that the police opened fire on him wrongfully.
The prosecution had argued that the day of the shooting police ranks went to Agricola, East bank Demerara when the defendant opened fire at the police with a firearm he pulled out from his shoulder bag. The prosecution stated that the police then ran for cover and returned fire at him and subsequently John was wounded.
John was sentenced on Thursday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court by Magistrate Sueanna Lovell, who found him guilty.
