When larceny suspect Melvin Mark was caught by police at Mahdia, he was found with both the stolen articles as well as marijuana, police yesterday told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
But Mark, 44, a miner of 118 Makouria Road, Mahdia, pleaded not guilty to larceny and drug possession charges when he was arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. He was, however, refused bail and remanded to prison.
It was alleged that on December 20, Mark stole a bag from David Thomas that contained two cellular phones and 10 ounces gold, totalling $106,000.
The court was told that the theft was reported to police, who later found Mark with the stolen articles. They searched him and allegedly found with grammes of cannabis, after which he was subsequently arrested and taken to the Mahdia Police Station. “Give meh a reasonable bail ya honour cause me get investment out deh,” said Mark, after he entered not guilty pleas.
Police Prosecutor Venetta Pindar stated that Mark had not shown any special reason for bail on the narcotics charge, while also noting that he had many pending matters before the court.
As a result, the magistrate refused bail and the matters were transferred to the Mahdia Magistrate’s court for January 16.
