Joshua Payne, who is accused of knifing Kelvin Canes to death at the Stabroek Market, was charged and remanded to prison yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Payne was not required to plead to the capital charge and was remanded by Magistrate Leron Daley until February 1, when the Preliminary Inquiry is due to start.
It was alleged that on December 19, Payne stabbed Canes, 41, known as ‘Red,’ to death during a fight.
Evidence provided in court by the prosecutor stated that on the day in question, around 4pm, an argument between the two men ensued and during a scuffle the accused pulled out a knife from his haversack and knifed Canes about his body.
Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick mentioned that Cane was stabbed in his left knee, right thigh and left arm-pit. The accused, Bostwick added, escaped on foot while Canes was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he pronounced dead on arrival.
The prosecution stated that investigations were conducted and the accused was subsequently arrested.
At the time of his arrest, Bostwick said, Payne admitted to the crime and handed over the weapon into police custody. He was then charged with the crime instituted.
