The third Guyana Boxing Association GBA/Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) under-16 championships will box off today at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Gym.
The event which will bring the curtains down for GBA’s calendar events for 2012, will box off from 10:00hrs.
After staging two successful tournaments earlier in the year in Georgetown and Linden, DDL has fulfilled its promise to sponsor the third edition under its Pepsi and Gatorade brands.
24 of the best amateur boxers under the age of 16 will test their skills for trophies and medals in 12 bouts.
According to Technical Director of GBA, Terrence Poole, the tournament will attract the best of the best under 16 boxers from all across the country. The Simon Pures will come from the Forgotten Youth Foundation Gym, The Harpy Eagles Gym, The Young Achievers Gym, Essequibo Boxing Gym, Rose Hall Jammers Boxing Gym and the Five Star Boxing Gym.
The pugilists will be placed in the following divisions: 50-54 pounds, 55-59 pounds, 70-74 pounds, 75-79 pounds, 80-84 pounds, 85-89 pounds, 90-94 pounds, 95-99 pounds, 100-104 pounds, 105-109 pounds and 119 to 126 pounds.
In an invited comment, recently reelected president of the association, Steve Ninvalle, commended DDL for the sponsorship of the competitions which he stated has helped “in fostering with the nursery programmes”.
Ninvalle also mentioned that he is looking forward to another successful year with DDL and our other sponsors in the year ahead.
