Arancaria heterophylla (excelsa) commonly called the Norfolk Island Pine or Christmas tree is an evergreen tree and can grow up to 200 ft in height. It originates from Norfolk Island in the South Pacific and was named after the Duchess of Norfolk by Captain James Cook who discovered the island for England. It is a slow-growing tree bearing stiff branches covered with prickly needles.
The Norfolk Island Pine can be used as a potted plant indoors with lights draped on it for the festive season, although smaller plants can be pressed into service as table displays decorated with bows. However, the tree can also be planted outdoors in full sunshine when it is tall enough. Many people do this, and decorate it with fairy lights for the Christmas season. It can be seen at DDL Diamond, Banks DIH, along the East Coast and East Bank often draped with fairy lights.
The Norfolk Island Pine can be grown by seed; however, small plants are on the market for sale. It likes moisture with good drainage. Fertilize with Miracle Gro All Purpose or Blue Granuals once every two weeks when small, and once per month when planted outdoors.
