The West Demerara/East Bank Essequibo Chamber of Commerce has been renamed the Guyana Region 3 Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
This was one of the decisions coming out of a statutory meeting it held on November 21 at the Aracari resort conference room, Plantation Versailles, West Bank Demerara, a press release from the organization said.
Members identified pavement vending and vending on government reserves as a problem in Region 3.
This will be discussed further at subsequent meetings.
The chairman, Sase Shewnarain also reported that business and development works in Malgre Tout have been affected by overtopping of the river dam.
The release said that a letter was sent to the Minister of Transport and Hydraulics, Robeson Benn describing the situation and asking for intervention but no response was received.
The executive also decided that there would be three types of membership. It also resolved that the organization will be engaged in community work and will select an orphanage and senior citizen home to help. It will also participate in disaster relief work.
Several core principles were adopted. These are: members’ business practices shall respect the rights of the child and eschew trafficking in persons.
Its vision statement is that Region Three will “become an area of increased employment opportunities, higher standard of living and improved community well-being”.
Several committees were also set up.
