A transformer at the corner of Bourda and Charlotte streets, last night caught afire and many Bourda market stallholders hurriedly evacuated their stalls.
The fire which occurred around 8.25 pm was preceded by sparking of wires.
When Stabroek News arrived on the scene, flames were seen emanating from a wire while a blue liquid dripped on nearby stalls.
The Guyana Fire Service arrived promptly and evacuated stall holders with their merchandise over fears that the transformer might have fallen.
Guyana Power and Light officials quickly disconnected power in the area and
began work to have the damaged transformer repaired.
An eyewitness said that around the time the fire started, a bright spark issued from the transformer.
