Dear Editor,
I refer to your editorial of Thursday, December 13, captioned ‘Adding insult to injury.’ Added to all the garbage mentioned in the editorial is the horse faeces and urine, due to the boom in the construction industry. Outlets for the sale of building materials are springing up all over, and in front of these outlets as many as half a dozen horse carts will park at a time. These animals urinate and defecate causing a horrible stink and a most unhealthy situation. True, to the people selling the building materials the smell of horse droppings is the smell of money, but for the people who live in the neighbourhood it is something else entirely; they can’t inhale fresh air day or night. Some people tell me the horse cart is helping the small man, but this is total nonsense. Find out how much a canter charges to move a load and how much the owner of a horse cart charges. Apparently Suriname and Trinidad do not have small men.
I must congratulate Gafoors for not delivering stocks to animal-drawn vehicles, and an outlet in Grove EBD for not allowing horse carts in front of the place. Of course our public hospitals have medicines, but prevention is still better than cure.
Yours faithfully,
W P George
