The national T20 cricket squad preparing for next year’s regional T20 tournament which bowls off early next month yesterday broke camp for the Christmas holidays.
The squad will reassemble on Thursday with West Indies test batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul expected to join the squad for further preparation.
The tournament will be the final one to be played in the country versus country format with the West Indies Cricket Board moving to a franchise run tournament in 2014. Meanwhile the Guyana T20 team defeated a Berbice XI by 36 runs in their latest warm up game Thursday evening at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
The match was another low scoring affair with the Guyana team scoring at just over a run a ball but
incisive bowling by off spinner Steven Jacobs ensured the national team remained unbeaten in their series of warm up matches before they wing out for Trinidad and Tobago where the first leg of the Caribbean T20 2013 tournament will be played.
Opener Trevon Griffith struck 22 with two fours while Narsingh Deonarine hit one six in 18. Derwin Christian made 15 with two fours while Jonathan Foo and Royston Crandon each made 12 and Stephen Jacobs 11 as the National team posted 127-8 in 20 overs.
Medium pacer Clinton Pestano was the pick of the bowlers for the Berbice team with 4-22 while the left arm spin of Eugene La Fleur picked up 2-16.
The Berbicians, in reply, were bowled out for 91 in 19.5 overs. Former Test opener Sewnarine Chattergoon struck two fours in 22 while Delbert Hicks made 12 with the aid of a solitary boundary. Assad Fudadin and La Fleur were the other batsmen to reach double figures with 10 each.
Jacobs bagged 4-14 from four overs while Crandon and leg spinner Devendra Bishoo claimed two wickets each for 11 and 12 runs respectively. (Neil Barry)
