A Leopold Street man was yesterday remanded to prison until January 18, 2013, when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charges of robbery and unlawful assault.
It is alleged that on December 17, Omalo Williams of 83 Leopold Street, Werk-en-Rust robbed Debra Jones of a gold chain valued at $200,000. It was also alleged that on November 30, he robbed Kennard Ramnarine of a cellular phone valued at $25,000 and unlawfully assaulted him.
The prosecution told the court that on December 17, Jones was sitting in the front seat of a taxi, which turned into Croal Street. The defendant, who was standing on the western side of the road, snatched the chain she was wearing and made good his escape, the matter was then reported to the Brickdam Police Station and Williams was arrested.
The prosecution also told the court that on November 30, Williams confronted Ramnarine, dealt him several cuffs to his face and stole his phone.
Williams pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecution objected to bail saying that Williams has pending matters in the court and because the offences were committed within a short period of time.
The magistrate then remanded him until January 18, when statements will be filed.
