(Trinidad Express) Two Laventille brothers appeared in the Port of Spain Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with murder, possession of arms and ammunition and shooting with intent to do bodily harm, following their arrest last week.
The men–Darvin Williams, 22, and his 18-year-old brother Dexter—have been charged with the murder of 30-year-old Sheldon Duncan, who was shot dead on December 11 near his Upper Eastern Quarry, Laventille home.
The men, who were represented by defence attorney Fareed Ali, were also charged with shooting with intent to injure or cause grievous bodily harm to Keston Medina on the same day, as well as possession of a firearm and ammunition with intent to injure or harm.
The men were arrested at their Picton Road, Laventille home on December 17 in connection with a stolen refrigerator.
During the police investigations, the men, both labourers at the Port of Port of Spain, were pointed out as the men allegedly responsible for Duncan’s death.
During their court appearance yesterday, Ali informed Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar that the men were in custody for a period of nine days prior to their court appearance and they were only allowed to bathe once.
He added that this was in contravention of their rights.
Ali also requested several documents from the arresting officer in the matter, WPC Lynch, including the criminal records of witnesses, interview notes, video footage of the interview, caution statement and other documents.
Court prosecutor Sgt Ricky Lochan informed the magistrate that the men refused to have their finger prints taken and asked that they be ordered to do so.
Ali then informed Ayers-Caesar that the men would submit themselves to be fingerprinted.
The matter was adjourned to January 23.
