The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) will stage a one-day rapid chess tournament tomorrow at the Kei-Shar’s Sports club, Hadfield Street from 10:00hrs. Registration begins at 9:00hrs.
The event, which is being sponsored by Demerara Distillers Limited under its Topco Juices brand, is the final one on the GCF’s calendar for 2012.
Demerara Distillers Limited Sales Manager Alexis Langhorne yesterday presented the sponsorship cheque of $40,000 to Shiv Nandalall, president of the GCF and stated that her company was very pleased to have worked with the federation on hosting the tournaments.
“It is our way of developing the sport and the players,” she remarked. She added that tournaments assist local players to move on and compete at an international level.
“DDL under its Topco brand has been sponsoring chess for the past five years and I look forward to working with the federation in hosting future tournaments,” she concluded.
Nandalall extended gratitude to the company for its unbroken commitment and praised its input for the continued growth of the game.
“Sponsorship is an important ingredient in the entire process and chess needs to maintain the goodwill and confidence of the sponsors,” Nandalall remarked.
Trophies, cash prizes and medals are at stake. A special prize will be awarded to the best Under-16 player. The tournament consists of seven rounds and each player would have 20 minutes on the clock during each round. All senior and junior chess players are invited to participate.
