(Trinidad Express) Convicted killer Darryl Charles-Bissoon was recaptured in San Juan yesterday, almost a week after he escaped from the Port of Spain prison when he and two other men scaled the walls of the complex.
The escape occurred around 7.15 a.m. on December 24, but two of the escapees were immediately recaptured, while Charles-Bissoon was seen heading into East Port of Spain moments after he jumped over the wall.
The Sunday Express understands Charles-Bissoon was recaptured by a team of North Eastern Divisional officers at Stanford Street, San Juan, shortly before 3 p.m.
One resident who spoke to the Sunday Express said from around 1 p.m. a National Security helicopter was seen hovering over parts of San Juan until approximately 3 p.m.
After his recapture, Charles-Bissoon was taken to the Morvant Police Station and he is expected to appear before a Port of Spain magistrate later this week, charged with escaping legal custody.
On October 6, Charles-Bissoon and Anderson “Weasel” Mapp were found guilty of the murder of Colin De Landro, who was shot dead during a family lime at Prizgar Road, San Juan, on the morning of May 28, 2005.
Charles-Bissoon, Mapp and another man, Ryan Stephens, were before Justice Carla Browne-Antoine, but a retrial was ordered for Stephens while the other two were read the death sentence.
De Landro was shot eight times, four times in the head.
He died about a week later at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex at Mt Hope.
State attorney Randall Hector led evidence that it was just one man who shot de Landro that morning, but all three had to be held liable because they all stormed de Landro’s family gathering with the intention of killing him.
Hector also led evidence that although one man shot de Landro, all three opened fire on de Landro’s relatives that morning.
His sister was also injured.
