Two police constables are under close arrest after they were caught red-handed returning a stolen laptop computer to the owner who had given them a sum of money for the return of the article.
In a statement, the police said that on Christmas Eve, a taxi-driver and his three passengers were held up by two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun, at Haslington North, East Coast Demerara, during which two laptop computers, a quantity of jewellery, three cell phones and a sum of cash were taken away from the victims by the perpetrators who escaped on a motorcycle.
The statement said that on Friday, police investigators received information that two police constables had approached the owner of one of the computers and had received a sum of money from him for the return of the computer. “The computers had not been recovered by the police investigators during the course of the ongoing investigations,” the statement said.
A sting operation was set up and the two ranks were found with the stolen laptop computer in a house at North Ruimveldt, Georgetown. Investigations are continuing.
