(Trinidad Express) THE glitter of gold cost a La Horquetta man his life after a gunman attempted to rob him outside his home on Saturday.
The mother of Abraham Sydney, 27, said the gunman wanted a gold chain her son was wearing, but even after emptying his gun, he left empty-handed.
Speaking to reporters at her home yesterday evening, Carol Sydney said the shooter wanted to rob her son of the gold chain.
She said Sydney was standing outside a neighbour’s home when he was approached.
“They tried to take his gold chain, but they didn’t get it. After they shoot him, the gun was empty, it had no more bullets. So the man drop the gun and run,” she said.
The woman said she needed to keep strong for her other children as they mourn their sibling’s passing. Sydney, she said, had five brothers and one sister.
“I have to cope because I know the Lord. All I can do is cope. And to all the other parents out there who lost their children, I want them to know that once they know the Lord, everything will be okay. He will bring you through it,” she said.
Sydney’s death has taken the country’s murder toll for the year so far to 380, according to an Express tally.
Investigators said around 5.50 p.m., Sydney, of Anthony Prospect Crescent, Phase Five, La Horquetta, was in the company of some friends along the roadway close to his home when they were approached by a man wearing a bandana over his face.
Officers said the man pulled out a firearm and announced a hold-up. Eyewitnesses told police a struggle ensued between gunman and members of the group.
It was then the gunman opened fire, hitting Sydney several times.
The firearm was recovered on the scene, said police.
His friends took Sydney to the Arima Health Facility, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
