Following her recent success in Trinidad national junior player Chelsea Edghill is upbeat about her prospects for 2013.
In her first interview since tasting success in the women’s singles at the Reliability and Maintenance Super Singles tournament in Trinidad and Tobago, Edghill told Stabroek Sport that the tournament was challenging but that she emerged victorious never-the-less.
“It was a great tournament, a great experience, much to learn from when playing, “said Edghill who was without her coach Idi Lewis.
Playing in the round robin final at the Central Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Chaguanas, Edghill won all of her matches which included a come-from-behind win over Trinidad’s top-ranked women’s player Linda Partap Boodhan.
Edghill was pushed to the limit against Partap Boodhan in her five set victory which she won 11-4, 10-12,10-12, 8-11, and 11-6 winning six of the last seven points of the contest.
“That game was coming down towards the end of the day and I was really tired,” she said. I started the game pretty well but mid-game I was tired. What I did was to start conserving on my energy to build up for a final flourish,” she added.
She disclosed that there are more female players playing the sport in Trinidad adding that they are also at a much higher level.
“Senior level there is a lot more competitive as they have got a lot more senior women players than Guyana. It was in a sense better as compared to Guyana. It’s a lot harder playing in Guyana than in Trinidad,” she declared.
Edghill has had a successful year which saw her winning silver medals at the Caribbean junior championships and in the 21-years and under category at the senior Caribbean championships.
She also participated with some measure of success on the international circuit.
Edghill said that while competing on the international circuit is great for any junior player it is not an easy task as one has to be mentally and physically prepared for the challenges whilst competing.
Edghill, who said the tournament in Trinidad was her last for 2012, said she is looking forward to the new year where she would be competing at both the local and international circuits opening the season by playing in either the Mashramani or the Silver Bowl tournaments in early February.
She pointed out that her calendar for next year was not yet completed but said she has her sights set on participating in some of the biggest local tournament before she ventures out onto the international circuit.
