Last Thursday evening the Woodside Choir, which is still celebrating their Jubilee Year, gave what is perhaps one of their best Christmas presentations, billed as ‘Night of the Father’s Love.‘ It was an excellent evening of music.
1 want to make special reference to David Dewar’ s very professional introduction to his solo item in which he informed the audience that the lyrics of his song ‘Divinity‘ were written by A J Seymour and the music was composed by Haworth (both Guyanese).
This is a standard of introduction which should be adopted whenever our national songs are aired on television or radio. I am of the view that there are generations of Guyanese who do not know these composers, and what is more, that we are in danger of condemning these composers to the forgotten pages of our history. However, we must give credit to the station which airs these national songs as a regular feature, at times naming the performers. The presenter just needs to go a step further by naming the composers of both the lyrics and the music.
Back to the concert: let’s keep our eyes on the Bank of Guyana Choir. They are a new and up-and-coming group; their performance was good and much could be expected of them.
On the whole, it was an excellent evening of entertainment to which all friends of the Woodside Choir, as listed on their programme, made an enjoyable contribution.
