After leading Buxton United to victory and the $4M prize in the Annual Kashif and Shanghai Football Tournament, national forward Dwain Jacobs hopes to ink a contract with an overseas club.
“I would really like to secure a contract from an overseas club,” Jacobs told Stabroek Sport in an interview yesterday. “It would be great to get a contract from a club in the Caribbean like Caledonia AIA (Trinidad) or a MLS club in North America, I have represented this country on many occasions, that was one of my dreams but now I have other goals to achieve,” he said.
Jacobs who had multiple assists and netted two goals in the K&S tourney revealed that though he wanted to win the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award leading the team to the title was his ultimate goal and is the proudest moment of his football career.
“Going to Buxton was a blessing,” he said. “I worked hard with the youngsters and we believed in each other to achieve our goal, we wanted to win it all but we were in the group of death but as God would have it, we came out the winners,” he added.
Jacobs acknowledged that playing a key role with this young team to secure victory and creating history just two and a half months after joining the club was a great achievement.
However, defeating his former club, Alpha United in the semi finals was bittersweet. “To be honest beating my former club was a sad moment for me, I didn’t even want to play in the game against them, my recognition and most of my achievements came when I was with Alpha, I know they are the best club in the country, but I had to do what was best for my team,” he said.
The Golden Grove resident who turns 26 later this month also revealed plans to return to Alpha United to participate in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championships which kicks off later this year.
On the road to the finals, Buxton United trounced Winners Connection three-one; knocked-out 2009/2010 champions Western Tigers one-nil and needled favourites, Alpha United one-nil. Buxton United outgunned Amelia’s Ward United six-five on penalties to win the tournament.
