A woman, who was attacked and beaten by a home invader just days before Christmas at Orangestein, East Bank Essequibo, succumbed to her injuries yesterday morning.
Stabroek News was told that on December 20, 2012, housewife Margaret Singh was attacked by a lone man, who beat her with a piece of iron, hitting her to the head. The woman’s grandchild, for whom she was caring at the time of the attack, was also beaten.
Oudaimal Singh said he went home at about 4:30pm on the day of the attack to find a crowd of relatives and onlookers, who told him that they took this wife to the hospital. She was first taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital and then transferred to the Georgetown Hospital.
The child was discharged after one week of hospitalisation but his grandmother remained in hospital in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital, where she succumbed.
Stabroek News understands that during the bandit who carried out the attack took away some $30,000 in cash and two cellular phones from the home. The bandit also ransacked a wardrobe but Oudaimal Singh was unable to say whether anything else was taken from the home.
One of the neighbours told this newspaper that a man was seen leaving the home of the woman. The police held and released two persons in connection with the attack, this newspaper had learnt. The family had also suffered a break-in in November.
