National Junior Chess Champion Anthony Drayton won the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) Topco Juices blitz tournament o held at the Kei-Shar’s Sports Club last Sunday.
Fellow junior Ron Motilall was the only player who drew with Drayton in the competition which saw Drayton winning a trophy and cash incentive.
Frankie Farley and Irshad Mohammad secured the second and third spots respectively in the senior category.
Regular tournament player Roberto Neto was first in the junior category while Saeed Ali placed second and Motilall, third.
The three top juniors all ended on the same score but achieved their respective positions on the tie-break. Saif Afroze was fourth and Carlos Petterson, fifth.
Omar Grant was adjudged the Best Under-16 Player while Sheriffa Ali, the lone female, received a prize for her participation.
GCF president Shiv Nandalall urged the junior participants step up their game and challenge the seniors as was done by Drayton.
The prizes were distributed by DDL Sales Manager Alexis Langhorne who pledged her company’s commitment to the promotion of chess in the new year.
The points standings for the senior participants after seven matches read: Anthony Drayton six and a half, Frankie Farley and Irshad Mohammad five apiece, Alexander Duncan and Glenford Corlette four each, Chino Chung three and a half, Errol Tiwari and Alex Joseph three each.
The scores of the juniors read: Roberto Neto, Saeed Ali and Ron Motilall five points each, Saif Afroze four and a half, Carlos Petterson, Davion Mars and Omar Grant four each.
