Kalanchoe blossfeldiana, commonly called Christmas Kalanchoe is loved by everyone. It originates from Madagascar and is a tropical succulent flowering plant with thick fleshy spoon-shaped dark green leaves. The leaves form a mound from which grow long thin stems carrying dense clusters of flowers.
These plants are easy to grow and will bloom for several months.
Originally only the scarlet was available and popular, however, a new range of colours are available today. These include red, yellow, orange, pink. white and fuschia to purple, with red being popular.
The plants are usually compact in size and grow to approximately 12 inches in height. Dwarf varieties are also available and they grow to approximately 6 inches in height. Mass several plants together to form an attractive display.
Kalanchoe can be grown from cuttings in a well-drained sandy soil. Allow the soil to dry out before the next watering. Fertilize with Miracle Gro All Purpose once every two weeks. The plant can be grown in full sun.
They make excellent potted plants to give as gifts. There are roughly 125 species.
